The Closing Statement of the Sudan Humanitarian Crisis Conference

20 November 2023

This homeland belongs to us,
With all its wars and famine and pandemics…
It belongs to us!

The Sudan Humanitarian Crisis Conference took place in Cairo from 18th to 20th November 2023. The conference tackled through various discussions over the three  days how to revitalize the efforts of humanitarian aid and civilian protection amidst the war that has erupted since 15th of April 2023 in our beloved country; Sudan.

A number of CSOs has participated in the organization of the conference. Amongst  which was Fikra for Studies and Development, The Strategic Initiative for the Women  in the Horn of Africa (SIHA network), The Sudanese journalists Syndicate, The  Sudanese Society for Obstetrics and Gynecology, Darfur Bar Association and the Emergency Lawyers.

The preparatory committee of the conference would like to pay tribute once again to the Governments of Norway and United Kingdom for funding the activities of the conference. We would like to extend our thanks to The Arab Republic of Egypt for hosting the conference on its territories and for facilitation the arrival of the participants from inside and outside to Sudan. Also the preparatory committee of the conference would like to extend its thanks to the Norwegian Refugee Council, not  just for honoring the conference with the presence of the council secretary general Mr. Jan Egeland who has participated effectively in the conference sessions, but also for their consistent and efficient presence in the various conflict zones in Sudan.

The conference was further honoured with the presence and participation of a wide  range of the Sudanese stakeholders in the humanitarian aid sector on top of which, were the patriot volunteers in the emergency rooms and the various grassroots  youth initiatives who attended from inside Sudan. Those heroes who haven’t hesitated to provide the required support to our people during the humanitarian crisis that has been emerged from the war before anyone. They have leveraged the willingness and the patriotism of the Sudanese People to innovate solutions that can overcome the suffering of the defenseless civilians, especially those stuck in the conflict areas and the internal displaced people.  Some of those participants faced a  lot of risks to reach to here and participate in the conference. We would like to express our thanks and gratitude for their courage and the relentless willing to provide aid and help to our people.

The total number of the participants of the conference was 420 participants. More  than 100 of them have made it from inside Sudan representing the various humanitarian initiatives the 18 Sudanese states.  Along with participation from the Sudanese refugees from Chad Uganda, Kenya Ethiopia, South Sudan, Egypt in  addition to participation of Sudanese experts from various domains.  As well, 102 participants from International relief organizations and UN agencies operating in Sudan.

The conference delivered a number of recommendations that have been presented  in the last day. These deliverables included recommendation in the Social protection, Health, Education, Sexual violations and Gender based violence during war, Food  security, coordination, localization and integration sectors. The preparatory Committee team will work on preparing a full report of these recommendations and  prepare a practical plan to translate them on the ground through the profound synergy and coordination between the emergency rooms and other grassroot initiatives and the International organizations.

This conference is not an event that comes to an end today, however it is a first step  in a process that we hope that will be integrated with all other processes to revitalise the response to the humanitarian crisis in Sudan. The role played by the grassroot initiatives in the humanitarian crisis, which is  inspired by the Sudanese heritage of solidarity and courage, represents a pivotal role  in combating the suffering caused by war. This significant role should always be considered in the planning of any initiatives or activities to address the humanitarian crisis in Sudan.

Our beloved country Sudan will remain great and strong and victorious with the  relentless will of its people to live in dignity and security and to have stable live despite the downtimes.

May God Save Sudan and the People of Sudan
