From Conflict to Sanctuary: Protection of Civilians in Sudan

Fikra for Studies and Development is pleased to share the publication of a compelling commentary, ‘Time for Action: Envisioning a New Approach to Protect Civilians in Sudan,’ authored by our CEO: Amgad Fareid Eltayeb, and featured by the European Council on Foreign Relations.
The publication tackles the critical issue of protecting civilians caught in the crossfire of Sudan’s ongoing conflict with proposals that transcend the limitations of traditional peacekeeping and making missions, arguing for a paradigm shift towards more effective and implementable strategies for the Protection of Civilians in Sudan with the following key elements:
Enhanced Monitoring and Verification of Human Rights Violations: A robust system to track and verify human rights violations in government-controlled areas.
Satellite-monitored Demarcated Green-Zones: Aiming to establish secure environments for civilians while also engaging in the revitalization of economic and agricultural activities that tackle the humanitarian needs of Sudan.
Civilian Support Mission: An international civilian support mission will be established to deliver essential services to vulnerable populations, ensuring their access to healthcare, food security, education and other essential services.
FikraSD urges the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to seriously consider these proposals as a viable and implementable strategy for enforcing Resolution 2736. This new approach has the potential to overcome the shortcomings of classic peacekeeping missions and break free from the misguided notion that a ceasefire is an absolute prerequisite for interventions aimed at protecting civilians.
