TRADE UNIONISM MOVEMENT IN SUDAN... A RAY OF LIGHT AMIDST THE CHAOS OF THE COUP

Since the beginning of the glorious revolution of December of 2018, the Sudanese Professionals Association has been at the forefront of the political landscape, leading and directing the movement. This was a continuation of the Sudanese labor movement’s heritage of resisting dictatorships and striving for democracy.

After the victory of the revolution and the beginning of the transitional period, a growing trade union movement took place in the direction of drafting a new trade union law. However, the divisions that befell the Sudanese Professionals Association as a result of political polarization led to the weakening of its role and the diversion of its divisions to focus on political work isolated from their constituents. This resulted in a rise in factional activity among trade unionists as they sought to establish elected unions apart from the Sudanese Professionals Association.

This momentum accelerated significantly after the coup on October 25, 2023. Indeed, three professional syndicates, namely the Sudanese Journalists Syndicate, the Dramatists Syndicate, and the Sudan Doctors Syndicate, successfully elected their delegated committees among their members.

This report examines the hurdles and specifics surrounding the formation of these three unions. It also encourages the remaining professional and labor groups to follow the same path to establish their unions and to prevent the hijacking and appropriation of their voices by unauthorized groups and individuals who take advantage of the absence of unions to work in the name of trade unions and professional groups and to represent them dishonestly.
