A Call for Protection of Civilians in the Liberated Areas

A call for Protection of civilians in the liberated areas

Following the advancement of the Sudanese Armed Forces in the capital, Khartoum, reports of grave violations against civilians in Khartoum Bahri have resurfaced with alarming frequency. These reports have become widespread, as such violations are being committed openly and repeatedly by both official and volunteer armed groups. Documented crimes, captured in audio and video recordings, include extrajudicial executions and killings—acts that may constitute war crimes and risk plunging the country into an uncontrolled spiral of violence.

At a time when the Sudanese people are celebrating the victories of the armed forces, hoping for an end to the atrocities and massacres perpetrated by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), aspirations for stability and the restoration of the social fabric have grown stronger. However, this cohesion remains under attack by forces seeking to turn the war into an ethnic and regional conflict.

These crimes cannot be ignored or accepted, and there must be an unequivocal demand for immediate accountability.

Fikra for Studies and Development fully condemns these violations and calls for swift and fair accountability for all those responsible, whether through direct involvement or by allowing them to occur. We also reaffirm the need for military leadership to uphold its legal and moral responsibilities and call for the immediate apprehension of the perpetrators and their public prosecution.

Furthermore, we renew our call for the urgent deployment of police forces and civilian law enforcement agencies to all liberated areas. It is essential to separate both regular and volunteer military personnel from direct interactions with civilians, ensuring that such engagements are strictly governed by the rule of law and its just and effective enforcement.

May God protect Sudan and its people.
